Charlie Chaplin was the first actor to be nominated for a single Academy Award (Best Actor) for a film in which he was credited as portraying two different characters. In The Great Dictator (1940), he played a Jewish barber - a variation of his Little Tramp character - and Adenoid Hynkel, his version of Adolf Hitler.
